Why did spain seek power?
The Spanish Empire had just defeated the Muslim Moors in the Reconquista early in 1492 when Columbus came to ask the King and Queen and Spain to fund his exploration. They had just re-taken over their Spanish land and were powerful and strong, so they agreed, hoping it would continue their streak of glory. As well as the great riches he promised from the New World, he also promised to spread Catholicism.
